South Suburban receives $2,000 xeric garden grant

South Suburban's Forestry and Horticulture Division will make long lasting improvements with a $2,000 grant from Colorado Garden Show, Inc. The Garden Show awarded funding to transform Gallup Gardens' English Cottage Garden to a Southwestern Xeric Garden reducing water usage, simplifying maintenance practices and offering an opportunity for the public to learn about the beauty of xeriscaping and native plants.
Volunteers from the Arapahoe County Master Gardeners and other groups will assist with the installation of subsurface irrigation in April 2007 and all new plant material will be installed by May 31, 2007. South Suburban Parks and Recreation is also financially supporting this project with a matching amount of $2000 for total improvements equaling $4,000.
Gallup Gardens, 6015 S. Gallup St., just east of Bemis Public Library, currently displays a water feature, sculpture and a rock garden along with a nice selection of plant material including trees, shrubs, herbs, old garden roses and an ornamental grass garden that was established in 2002 with proceeds donated in part by the Colorado Garden Show, Inc. Gallup Gardens is rented annually as a site for intimate nuptial ceremonies. To learn more about South Suburban's rentable outdoor spaces visit www.sspr.org.
